UCLA men's basketball coach Mick Cronin in COVID-19 protocols; Bruins' game vs. Alabama State postponed

Men's College Basketball, UCLA Bruins, Alabama State Hornets

Hours after UCLA announced that men's basketball coach Mick Cronin would not be able to coach Wednesday night against Alabama State due to COVID-19 protocols, the Bruins were forced to postpone the game altogether.

UCLA's announcement came less than an hour before its scheduled tip-off. The school offered no further details, only that the game would "not be played as scheduled due to COVID-19 protocols."

Associate head coach Darren Savino was expected to serve as acting coach for the game.

It was not immediately known whether the postponement came as a result of positive tests or multiple players and staff being deemed close contacts with someone who tested positive.

UCLA (8-1) is scheduled to play North Carolina on Saturday as part of the CBS Sports Classic in Las Vegas. The status of that game is now uncertain.

The fourth-ranked Bruins earned a forfeit victory earlier this month, when Washington was unable to play on Dec. 5 due to COVID-19 issues. All that said, they are riding a four-game winning streak with stingy defense, allowing an average of just 56 points per game during that stretch.
